About me

I'm a freelance writer, editor and sub-editor, available for copywriting, journalism commissions and subbing shifts. My book Reading the World: Postcards from my Bookshelf, the story of my project to read a book from every country in the world in a year, will be published by Harvill Secker in 2015.

Before becoming a writer, I was Campaigns Officer for architectural history charity the Victorian Society, a role which saw me interviewing miners, exploring castles and declaring heritage crime scenes, all in the name of saving old buildings.

When I'm not writing, I can often be found performing with some of London’s top professional choirs. Singing has taken me to such far-flung destinations as the Red Sea, the Arctic Circle, India, and Texas, as well many places in between.

Qualifications

I graduated from Cambridge University with a first-class degree in English literature and went on to do a master's in creative writing at UEA. I also have training in sub-editing from the London College of Communication and a postgraduate journalism diploma with distinction from the London School of Journalism.
